WILLOW, Alaska – Alaska’s Mount Redoubt volcano erupted five times overnight, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air in the volcano’s first emissions in nearly 20 years.
Residents in the state’s largest city were spared from falling ash, though fine gray dust was falling Monday morning on small communities north of Anchorage. The ash began falling around daybreak and continued into midmorning. They were supposed to end by noon.

Walter Kielholz said on Monday he would step down as chairman of Credit Suisse, to concentrate his efforts on being the next chairman of Swiss Re.
The move followed criticism that Mr Kieholz, currently Swiss Re’s vice-chairman, had been too distracted at the bank to focus on the reinsurer’s mounting difficulties.

Wednesday is National Signing Day, the first day football prospects can sign letters of intent to play college football.
Some players commit early and stick to their word. Other players wait until the last minute to make their college destinations, and invariably there are some unexpected choices.
Here are the five biggest surprises from this year’s National Signing Day:
 |
 |
 |
| DeAngelo Benton joined Auburn’s 2009 class after signing with LSU in 2007 and 2008. |
1. WR DeAngelo Benton
Schools in the mix: LSU and Auburn
School he chose: Auburn
Buzz: Benton was a four-star prospect and the No. 7 wide receiver in the nation in the 2007 class, and he signed with LSU out of Bastrop (La.) High School. But he failed to qualify. He enrolled at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy, signed with LSU again in 2008 and again failed to qualify. Benton didn’t play football this past season, enrolled in classes at home in Bastrop and still was listed as an LSU commitment. But with National Signing Day approaching, Benton squeezed in an official visit to Auburn. He pulled a NSD shocker by signing with Auburn and its new coaching staff.
2. WR Nu’Keese Richardson
Schools in the mix: Florida and Tennessee
School he chose: Tennessee
Buzz: Richardson, a Rivals100 prospect out of Pahokee (Fla.) High, seemed to be a perfect fit for Florida’s offense when he committed in October. Richardson didn’t show any signs of wavering until a last-weekend-before-NSD visit to Knoxville prompted rave reviews. Rumors emerged Wednesday morning that Richardson was considering postponing his decision, but he then ended up signing with Tennessee. Four-star athlete Marsalis Teague, from Paris (Tenn.) Henry County, was another Florida commitment who signed with the Vols on Signing Day.
3. LB Manti Te’o
Schools in the mix: BYU, USC, UCLA and Notre Dame
School he chose: Notre Dame
Buzz: One of the top linebackers in the country, Te’o – from The Punahou School in Honolulu – long was rumored to be a lean to BYU. But he eliminated the Cougars just a few weeks before NSD. He then named USC, UCLA and Notre Dame as his finalists, and most expected him to become a Trojan. But on Signing Day, Te’o announced his decision to head east to South Bend, Ind., and play for Irish coach Charlie Weis.
4. OL Bobby Massie
Schools in the mix: Alabama and Ole Miss
School he chose: Mississippi
Buzz: Massie, the top-rated prospect in the prep school ranks, had everyone guessing as to where he would end up playing. Massie’s favorite schools were a mystery for much of the football season, but as Signing Day neared, Alabama emerged as the rumored favorite. But not long after those rumors surfaced, speculation rose that Ole Miss was in a strong position for his signature. By Wednesday, both the Ole Miss and Alabama camps were equally confident, and Massie – originally a four-star prospect from Lynchburg (Va.) Liberty Christian Academy in the 2008 class – ended up choosing the Rebels.
5. Justin Green
Schools in the mix: Kentucky, Ohio State and Illinois
School he chose: Illinois
Buzz: Early on in the recruiting process, Green – from Louisville (Ky.) Male – gave a commitment to Kentucky. As the Rivals100 prospect’s recruitment picked up, more programs came calling. Green soon switched his commitment to Ohio State. Green looked solid as an Ohio State commit until the last days of his recruitment, and a late push by Kentucky cast some doubt. Then, Signing Day, Green didn’t sign with Ohio State or Kentucky but rather with Illinois, a school that emerged out of nowhere to get his signature.

WASHINGTON – After the flub heard around the world, President Barack Obama has taken the oath of office. Again. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath to Obama on Wednesday night at the White House — a rare do-over. The surprise moment came in response to Tuesday’s much-noticed stumble, when Roberts got the words of the oath a little off, which prompted Obama to do so, too.
Don’t worry, the White House says: Obama has still been president since noon on Inauguration Day.
Nevertheless, Obama and Roberts went through the drill again out of what White House counsel Greg Craig called “an abundance of caution.”
This time, the scene was the White House Map Room in front of a small group of reporters, not the Capitol platform before the whole watching world.
“We decided that because it was so much fun …,” Obama joked to reporters who followed press secretary Robert Gibbs into the room. No TV camera crews or news photographers were allowed in. A few of Obama’s closest aides were there, along with a White House photographer.
Roberts put on his black robe.
“Are you ready to take the oath?” he said. (daha fazla…)

Third Test, Sydney (day two, stumps):
Australia 445 v South Africa 125-1
Clarke made South Africa pay for dropping him twice on Saturday
|
Australia gave themselves a good chance of earning a consolation victory in the final Test against South Africa on the back of Michael Clarke’s fine 138.
The Aussie vice-captain, dropped twice on the first day, converted an unbeaten 73 into his 10th first-class century.
And with further runs from Mitchell Johnson (64) and Nathan Hauritz (41), the Australians totalled a solid 445.
South Africa replied with 125-1, Graeme Smith retiring with a broken hand that will keep him out for six weeks.
The tourists, having won the first two matches to earn their first Test series victory in Australia, started the day in fine shape to force a whitewash. (daha fazla…)

At the very least, Mr. Jones believes he’s in a position to question Marion Barber’s toughness. Barber didn’t play in Pittsburgh yesterday with calf and pinkie toe injuries, and Jones roundaboutly called him a sissy yesterday. From Star-Telegram.com:
Jones believed Barber’s dislocated right pinkie toe was an injury that he could have played with against Pittsburgh. Before the team boarded for its flight to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Jones was stunned Barber did not make the trip.
After not practicing all week and with an additional sore calf, Barber felt he couldn’t play. Jones said Barber could have taped and braced the toe well enough to allow him to play.
“He can play with that injured toe,” Jones said. “He can play with the soreness and a combination of those things. I see nothing that led us to believe he couldn’t.”
That’s a fantastic way to alienate a running back. I’d love to be there when Jones calls Barber into his office and says, “Awww, does him him a wittle pinkie toe boo-boo?”
I think it’s usually best to tread lightly where another man’s injury is concerned, especially for a guy like Barber, whose toughness, to my knowledge, has never been up for debate before. I’m sure Mr. Jones is frustrated after the loss, but unless he’s dealt with the exact same injuries and performed the exact same tasks he’s asking someone else to perform, it’s probably not wise to call that guy a wuss. NEW YORK (AP) — Shoppers, who had snapped their wallets shut since September, turned out in force Friday to grab early morning deals and hard-to-find items like Elmo Live and the “Wii Fit” exercise game, but many said worries about the economy have them focusing on fewer gifts and less expensive, more practical items.
Meanwhile, the start of the shopping season proved deadly at both a Wal-Mart store in Valley Stream, N.Y., and a Toys “R” Us store in Palm Desert, Calif. (daha fazla…)
